Online Radio Gets More Mainstream
from the too-much dept
Okay. So, the hype behind internet radio was that there would be a radio station for everyone. Unlike the real radio where every station has been blanded down to the lowest common denominator, online radio would let niche stations flourish. This hasn’t exactly been true. So many online radio ventures are no longer streaming at all. And, what do we have instead? All Alanis, all the time. Radio Free Virgin is launching a radio station that is all Alanis Morissette songs and interviews. So, instead of niche radio stations playing cool indie music, we get niche radio stations playing corporate produced, lowest common denominator music music. Oh well.

I think the radio format lends itself to lowest common denominator playlists, regardless of whether the radio is internet or ‘wireless.’
Satisfyingly real musical diversity can be found at places like mp3.com, where you can download and play prettymuch any damn unknown artist you ever wanted or didn’t want to hear.
