Micro Fuel Cells

from the refills? dept

A few weeks ago we had a story about using fuel cells to replace batteries in laptops. Why stop at laptops, though? Let’s get even smaller and look at fuel cells for mobile phones. Imagine having 20 hours of talk time on a single battery. The article goes into a lot of detail about how fuel cells work, and what needs to be done (a lot) before we find them in our phones (and other devices). The problem, though, that I see, is the need to buy “refills” instead of being able to just charge stuff. I get the feeling that most people prefer the ability to just charge something than having to buy a pack of refills to make their electronics work. Of course, the makers of fuel cells salivate at the “razor blade” approach to having a continual revenue stream from refill sales.
