The Letters X And P

from the seems-a-bit-questionable... dept

AMD swears that their decision to name their new chip the Athlon XP has absolutely nothing to do with Microsoft’s decision (and subsequent billions in advertising) to name their latest operating system Windows XP. AMD execs might have gotten away with that argument (thoughh, probably not) if they had made the announcement slightly before everyone in the world knew that Microsoft was calling their system XP. Instead, they made the announcement many many months after the fact. How some lawyer at AMD didn’t point out the potential for a Microsoft lawyer to come knocking on their door shows some incompetence. However, this is the same company that once called a chip “Corvette” until a certain General Motors lawyer stopped by. Why don’t they just go all out and call it a Pentium?
