A Good Business Plan Is A Thing Of Beauty

Esther Dyson talks about a business plan competition she attended in Russia. As she looked over the plans of the four finalists, she immediately discounted one that seemed like a little consumer play. But, then she met the entrepreneur and eventually this idea for haircutting software won the competition. Of course, it’s not clear what the purpose of the competition was. If it was about getting venture capital, then that company might not have been the best. There are plenty of great companies that VCs don’t want to fund, because they’re not designed to take on a large enough market. It strikes me that the haircut software could be a very nice, profitable business, but would never take over some huge market.
