How To Make Money Without Intellectual Property Laws

from the money dept

An interesting look at potential ways that musicians and artists can make money without relying on copyright laws. The basic premise is that artists can cut out the middlemen, and sell directly to consumers (not a new idea). The suggestion, though, is to set an arbitrary number of “pre-orders” that will be required before the piece of music is released. At that point the musician will have made his or her money (possibly more than if they had gone through a record label and sold many more albums) and the music can then be freely distributed. There are some other interesting suggestions as well. Some of these could work. The major problem with these, though, is they leave out the promotional aspects of what a label does. In order to get these fans to pony up, they need to know about you first.
