Studying the Malicious Hacker in His Natural Habitat

Apparently some folks set up easily crackable machines to lure malicious hackers (don’t complain about the distinction between cracker/hacker that’s just silly at this point) and study how they act. The results are not surprising. For the most part malicious hackers are pretty random about who they attack and seem to be motivated primarily by boredom, rather than any specific political stance. The thing they don’t talk about (which surprises me) is whether or not there is any sort of incentive to pick certain “high profile” web sites to try to make a bigger splash with a break in.
