The Human Genome Project, Now What?

from the burned-out-lab-rat dept

As the only molecular geneticist at Techdirt I felt compelled to explain a little more about what’s been going on with the identification of the human genome sequence. I know the world media has gone crazy about it but it is only a step (one which would have taken years longer without Craig Venter of Celera). I’ve discussed the human genome before but a quick recap is that we now have the raw data but most of the advances in molecular medicine will stem from the understanding and use of protein structure (not the genes themselves). I have a strong feeling were going to be seeing a lot more of Mr.Venter and his impatience for slow scientific research (thank goodness!).
