What Happened to Internet 2?

Interesting article all about the Internet 2 which most folks don’t hear much about, as we have no access to it. There was a lot of hype when it was first talked about, but now most people forget it exists. It will be interesting to see what becomes of it, but this article makes it sound like it’s going strong. Anyone have any other info?

What I find interesting is how are these “giga-pops” routing I-1 information? Or maybe a better question is at what point does I-2 and I-1 interface. Obviously they have to at some point. Since it looks like only some edus are on I-2 and no govs are, then to do true research you are going to have to jump back and forth. Does that mean multiple network connections? And are they using IPv6 or did they build it around IPv4?
It is a great idea – kind of like the ARPA net and early Internet before it became “commercialized”, but like roadways, as soon as those paying the bills open it up to the rest of the world, it will fill to capacity. Then what – I-3? (And if the edus think that companies like Qwest donated equipment and bandwidth out of the good of their heart, they are sniffing duplicating fluid…)
