  "I don't have a problem with legal immigration" is what racists say because they know how unpopular their actual beliefs are. It's a variation on Lee Atwater's comment about how they say "tax cuts" because they can't get away with saying the N-word anymore. It's still racism, but they sprinkle plausible deniability on top and make it socially acceptable.

  After years of feckless capitulation, ABC is clearly developing something vaguely resembling a backbone.

  Spine's got nothing to do with it. They thought it would be more expensive to fight Trump than to give him what he wanted; they found out they were wrong. It's a financial decision. And it's entirely possible that if they were relying on the Trump Administration to approve a major merger, like Paramount, they'd be doing exactly what Paramount's done.

  The MAGA GOP strategy lately seems to be pulling a page from the 1980s playbook (a Trump specialty) and declaring anyone they don’t like to be “communist.”

  The 1980s playbook? I'm not sure Trump's mentor, Roy Cohn, would call it that.

  They don't want to be a minority at all; they constantly insist that they represent the majority. The Silent Majority, the Moral Majority, etc. The thing about appealing to populism is that it relies on the premise that their beliefs are popular. That everybody else believes what they do but is too afraid to speak up, because they're the majority but they're also constantly oppressed and victimized by powerful outside forces.
