  I think his op-ed is a great example of the public domain and fair use. If it weren't for the opinions and writings of others, he wouldn't have been able to clarify and explain his own position!

  Obviously Mr. Walker didn't realize he could have sold that patent to a deserving IP firm who could then "provide" licenses to the right companies and "protect" the invention from counterfeiters who wanted to steal a convenient way to help light their homes and businesses.

  think the way he is interacting with fans is great, but I think the real biggest factors for his success are (a) he's an awesomely hilarious comedia and has an great reputation and existing fan base, and (b) he is selling the video for $5.

  Yes, the effect is multiplied if you have a bigger fan base, but the technique is sound no matter who you are.
  
  1. Work hard on making a quality product that draws fans.
  2. Cultivate those fans. Treat them well, keep them close.
  3. Offer products that appeal to you fans, which are:
  a. Reasonably priced, and
  b. Easy and convenient to use.
  4. PROFIT!
  
  Yes, you may not clear a million dollars, but you'll make money, and this is just more proof of it.

  Simply Put

  I like the Humble Indie Bundle, and in my case, including extra games if you pay more than the average purchase price. It was a great incentive for me to put in more.

  Wouldn't it be way easier to understand if they said "This is a bad bill and needs to be stopped"? It's just like writing a thesis, you don't dive straight into detail, you give an overview at the beginning.
  
  I think it's a business writing thing. As contradictory as it sounds, being wordy can be confused with eloquence. I often have to write things twice when I'm working, the second time just to simplify my purple prose.
  
  Not that it worked in this instance.

  Hey, never underestimate the ambition of youth. When I was that age, I was more than capable of playing Master of Orion for 14 hours straight. Lost most of the summer of '94 to that little game, which was practically nothing compared to "The Summer That Civ 2 Ate".

  You know normally I'd be against this, but my faith in politicians is at an all-time low, and the problems too obvious.
  
  There's just no room in this process to allow politicians to become "historians, advisors, lobbyists, liasons, relations officers, etc".
