  • Columbia’s Capitulation Backfired Spectacularly As Trump Admin Threatens Its Accreditation

    "I was murdered!"

You calling pro-Palestinian activism a "pogrom" is kind of like a white supremacist crying "white genocide" over interracial marriage.

    At least Guthrum had style...

And that is called paying the Dane-geld; But we've proved it again and again, That if once you have paid him the Dane-geld You'll never get rid of the Dane.

  • With Courts Repeatedly Telling Trump Migrants Have Rights, Stephen Miller Suggests It’s Time To Suspend Habeas Corpus

    Citizen ( profile ), 12 May, 2025 @ 12:55pm

"I voted for the leopards to eat other people's faces."

And MAGA cheers the prospect. They're confident that they'll never be targeted, even by mistake, so they don't really care if they no longer have habeas corpus rights themselves since it just hinders efforts to get rid of the people they hate. The few who realize that mistakes will happen are perfectly fine with playing the role of Archibald Buttle as long as it means the people they hate are gone, too.

  • Trump’s Secret Police Are Now Disappearing Students For Their Op-Eds

    Lex Iniusta Non Est Lex

I've seen apologists for this kind of tyranny claim it's perfectly legal. I'm not qualified to confirm or debunk such assertions, but it doesn't matter. The problem is not that this is illegal, which it may well be, but that it is unjust and tyrannical. In less enlightened times, it was legal for me to rape my wife (not that I have one), but that does not mean it would have been right or morally permissible for me to do that. Those who attempt to defend this blatant effort to silence dissent by claiming the law is on their side are lying, be it to themselves or, the people they address, or both; they support it not because it's legal, but because they want people like Ozturk silenced, regardless of what the law says. If courts rule in Ozturk's favor, those backing the effort to silence her will inevitably just call the judges--up to and including those on the Supreme Court--activists or something similar.

  • ICE Wants To Set Up A Social Media Dragnet So It Can Figure Out Who’s Criticizing The Agency

    Citizen ( profile ), 19 Feb, 2025 @ 11:59am

    So much for cutting waste...

Big Brother will likely dedicate a lot of the people's money to keeping an eye on all the criticism of ICE. I think that money could be put to better use elsewhere. If only we had some sort of government agency dedicated to streamlining the government and eliminating waste...

  • Musk Decries Hitler’s Censorship, Right Before Threatening To Jail Critics

    Citizen ( profile ), 18 Feb, 2025 @ 12:25pm

    Lügenpresse

I'm sure Musk and his defenders will claim the censorship is justified because--according to them--CBS and other outlets Musk wants censored are lying. We see this when Musk files SLAPP suits, after all. That's also the excuse Hitler's regime used for censorship. Anyone can accuse an outlet of lying, but that does not make the accusation true, let alone sufficient to win a defamation case. I also recall how a few years ago, right-wingers complained about Twitter's rules regarding misinformation, suggesting they were--at least at the time--aware of the risks inherent in giving someone the authority to summarily declare something false and censor it. That they are okay with Musk seeking to do that which they condemned Twitter for doing suggests to me that deep down, they are fine with censorship as long as they're the ones deciding what gets censored. "Fake news" is just the public-facing excuse.

  • GOP Is Quietly Freaking Out About Elon; Time For Them To Take A Stand

    Citizen ( profile ), 12 Feb, 2025 @ 01:39pm

That so? I figured Mr. Bennett just liked to change his username; Koby's continued presence here in spite of being a contrarian like Mr. Bennett led md to figure Techdirt just had a policy of not banning troublemakers. If Mr. Bennett really is getting banned and using alts to get around the bans, I'm thinking Techdirt needs to step up its moderation game--assuming there are tools available that it isn't already using.

You change usernames more often than your idol does.

Seriously, how many times is this now? I know you want Bōlz-senpai or whatever he's going by now to notice you, but you're far from the only fanboy of his trying to emulate his "style," and I doubt he's going to be paying any attention to a Techdirt comments section in the first place.

    You're the RINO, Koby

There is nothing "republican" about wanting an individual to have unchecked authority. Your faction of the GOP really should rename themselves the Monarchist Party and leave the name "Republican" for those who actually want the United States to be a republic.

  • MAGA’s Sickening Hypocrisy: From ‘Save The Children’ To ‘Defund The Org That Actually Saves Children’

    Citizen ( profile ), 07 Feb, 2025 @ 12:15pm

    The Safety of a Cage

If I'm to be charitable and assume these "save the children" types truly do believe that this anti-trans crackdown is for children's safety, kind of like how one might want to keep one's children from falling under the sway of a gang, there's still a controlling element to this demand--and I dare say a counterproductive one. Our children are and will always be their own people. We can try to guide them down what we see as the best paths for their future, but we can't force them down said paths, let alone keep them on them once we're gone. Keeping them outright ignorant of other paths is downright tyrannical and ultimately doomed to failure. How much must we keep them ignorant of to ensure they never "go astray?" How much must we control their movements, whom they meet, what media they consume, to "protect" them? I find it ironic--though unsurprising--that the same people complaining about a "nanny state" are also calling on the state to control not just their children, but everyone's; maintaining that much control is next to impossible without help from the state.

  • But Her Emails Redux: Team Trump Makes CIA Send List Of All Recently Hired Employees Over Unclassified Email

    Citizen ( profile ), 06 Feb, 2025 @ 11:18am

    Variation on an Old Joke

An elite American spy from the now DEI-free CIA, after extensive and grueling preparation, is parachuted over Manchuria in the dead of winter. He quickly gets rid of the parachute, dons local garments and starts to wade through the snow. After a lengthy march he finds a lonely hut, knocks at the door, and is allowed to enter by an elderly lady living in it. She invites him for a snack, and after some time asks: Lady: You're an American, aren't you? Spy: But Ma'am, how could you?! Don't I speak perfect Mandarin? Lady: You do! Spy: Am I not dressed like a Chinese person? Lady: You are! Spy: Are my mannerisms not typical of a Chinese person? Lady: They certainly are! Spy: Then why are you saying such things?! Lady: You see, son... it's because you're white.

  • The Faux Free Speech Warriors Attacking Free Speech

    Citizen ( profile ), 31 Jan, 2025 @ 11:51am

    Model T Freedom

A popular myth about the Model T is that Henry Ford said people can have it in any color as long as it's black. We're seeing a similar phenomenon when it comes to oligarchs' views on free speech. We can say whatever we want as long as it doesn't make the boss look bad. The key difference is that the myth about the Model T likely stems from speculation about how it was able to be so cheap; oligarchs like Musk, however, have their self-centered views on free speech because they're egotistical and have the money necessary to make examples out of their critics.

And That Is Why We Proofread

    > When your top priority is to make money, politics and morals **cease** take a back seat to profit. Nothing quite like rewording a statement only to forget to remove one of the words from an earlier iteration. Bonus points if the slip-up changes the meaning of the new iteration.
