I think you misunderstood me. I still need to eat. If my employer has decided to replace me with a machine, I need a new job. Finding a new job takes time, and not everyone has a reserve of money to live off of while they search. If I need new skills to be able to get a decent job, who's going to pay for my training? If a particular line of work becomes obsolete, someone--be it the government or the company that laid off all those people--must support the newly-unemployed and help them adjust. Unemployed people aren't going to just lie down and die for the good of the stock market. As things stand, I don't see any rich AI bros making any sort of meaningful effort to help those they're laying off. If a new technology only helps wealthy shareholders at the expense of everyone else, then I'm inclined to call it a detriment to society rather than a boon.

AI need not be the enemy, but it currently is

I oppose AI, but that is because I do not trust our government to ensure the technology becomes anything more than another way for wealthy elites to strip the world for parts. If we are to embrace AI, the government must do whatever is necessary to prevent it from screwing over commoners. If I lose my job because of AI, the government must support me financially, help me get a new job, etc. I don't think anyone who's been paying attention these past few years expects the Trump regime to do that--God knows a lot of the companies trying to use AI aren't. None of the advances AI promises will mean anything if only a small group of parasites at the top reap the benefits; indeed, if AI just makes the rich richer at the expense of everyone else, then I say, "Death to AI."

    Catch-22?

So if ICE grabs me and whisks me off to a detention center in Texas, how exactly would I go about proving my citizenship and getting released? According to ICE in this hypothetical scenario, I'm not a citizen, and according to the Fifth Circuit, that means I have no due process rights, meaning I can't contest ICE's claim, correct? Unless I'm missing something here, in this hypothetical scenario, any citizen grabbed by mistake--or, God forbid, grabbed by "mistake"--can only be released if ICE chooses to admit that they're a citizen.

    Lex Iniusta Non Est Lex

I'll take it a step further: I fully support nonviolent resistance to Trump's tyranny, regardless of legality. Those who marched against racial segregation in the 20th Century were perfectly willing to break the law in order to call attention to the injustice of racial segregation and the cruelty of those seeking to enforce it. Protesters are blocking a road? Good for them! Making noise near a hotel hosting ICE agents? Yes, please! King and Parks did not care if they were arrested, for they knew that they were in the right.

The Financial Times owes clowns an apology.

Clowns do stupid things on purpose to entertain an audience. Musk and his minions do things they don't even realize are stupid in order to stroke Musk's ego. The comparison of Musk's minions to clowns is an insult to the profession of buffoonery.

Shall we start a betting pool?

I'm thinking... 2-1 (or 6-3 if you prefer) odds in favor of the SCOTRP overturning the injunction, 2-1 in favor of the SCOTRP forcing a stay if the plaintiffs win at a lower court, and 2-1 in favor of the SCOTRP ruling in favor of the defendants when and if the matter reaches them.

"Das wird immer einer der besten Witze der Demokratie bleiben..."

There is a troubling tendency in our society to act as though being polite toward one's enemies makes one's ideas worth considering. That civility disappears when the ruse no longer needs to be maintained, though; you cannot civilly or politely execute someone for being "other," for the act by its very nature is uncivil. Those who argue for immoral policies, let alone in bad faith like Kirk, should not get a pass simply because they are able to be polite when not in a position to enshrine their agenda in law. To people like Kirk, civility is only ever a means to an end that gets discarded the instant it ceases to be necessary.

She will be hearing from me.

If she's this beholden to lobbyists, I doubt she'll listen. She "serves" my district, though. Perhaps it's time she faces a primary opponent...

A more accurate translation would be "Elon Musk should go fuck himself."

  • Jul 14, 2025 @ 12:11pm

Twitter is dead. Х is just its reanimated corpse.

I know it looks as though I'm using the Latin letter "X" to refer to the platform, but I'm actually using the Cyrillic letter "Х," the first letter in "хуй," as in "Илон Маск должен идти на хуй."

    Perjury?

Please correct me if I'm mistaken, but from the sound of it, the administration outright lied to the court, which is a crime. In addition, lawyers risk disbarment if they get caught lying to the court. Did the administration formally say, under oath, that it lacked jurisdiction? I know they've said it to the media, but to my knowledge, that's not a crime (though it is a slimy thing to do). The court's another story, though.

Noted. I stand by the content of my post, though. Frankly, I'm inclined to say there should be no rule against recording devices, too, but that's ultimately immaterial to the topic at hand (i.e. wanting advance notice of inspections).

  • Jun 23, 2025 @ 10:55am

    Up next: no cameras allowed

Nothing says "everything we're doing is legal" quite like insisting on three days' advance notice of any impending inspection. I'm sure ICE wouldn't use those three days to conceal evidence of wrongdoing and/or make conditions look more humane than they actually are... /s

    Online arguments ≠ academic debate

While I agree with the principle that it's good to have an open mind, the trick is doing so without wasting time on trolls and other bad actors who aren't actually interested in taking a serious look at the topic at hand. If you have the patience to engage with trolls and bad actors on the off chance that you'll eventually run into who shares the aforementioned people's political views and is willing to engage in a serious and honest discussion, good for you. I think most of us would rather not dig through a cesspit in search of a gem that allegedly is hidden in the muck, though, and I do not appreciate being implicitly accused of narrowmindedness for prioritizing my mental health. I didn't join Bluesky to listen to the same tired arguments for right-wing tyranny that I routinely hear from Koby right here in Techdirt comments sections, let alone put up with mockery from a bunch of people who are only there to "own the libs."

Oh. ...I guess my first reply got through after all.

I don't recall when exactly my earlier reply actually showed up on my end, but I don't recall seeing it when I typed up my second reply.

    Shoo, fly!

I have a story for you, pesky one: Every day, weather, health, and schedule permitting, I go on a walk around my neighborhood. During one of those walks, I attracted the attention of a fly. While that is a foreseeable consequence of going on a walk, it is not among my reasons for going on one. This fly simply would not get the message that I wanted it to leave me alone. I could swat it aside with one hand, but it came right back. It never stayed in sight long enough for me to clap it in midair, either. It eventually occurred to me that I might be able to rid myself of it by sprinting, so I tried that. It worked. It turns out that despite their incredible reflexes, flies actually aren't that fast. Why do I tell you this story? Because just as I want to go on a walk without having to put up with flies buzzing around my head, so, too, do I want to use social media without having to listen to MAGA propagandists and trolls. Just because you might find value in their drivel does not mean I do; to me, they are simply a nuisance, never saying anything interesting or enlightening. Bluesky gives me the tools to limit my exposure to them. My experience with MAGAs is that they are never there for good-faith debate; most are just there to be annoying and the few that are more than just trolls either lie or "presume a well-hidden fire based on the lack of smoke" when engaged with. To put up with MAGAs on social media on the off chance that one has something to say that's worth listening to is akin to putting up with flies on my walk on the off chance that one of them is an angel in disguise with an important message from God.

    Running from flies

I've shared this story a few times, and I think it's a fitting allegory for the practice of blocking. Every day, weather, health, and schedule permitting, I go on a walk around my neighborhood. One day, a fly took an interest in me. It constantly buzzed around my head. It never stayed on one place long enough for me to clap it in mid-air, nor did swatting it away with one hand keep it away. It turns out, however, that flies are slower than their incredible dodging abilities would have you believe. I managed to rid myself of the fly simply by sprinting a block or two. That fly may have been a foreseeable consequence of going on a walk, but that didn't mean I was under any obligation to put up with its presence. Given my experience with flies, I also had no reason to believe I had anything to gain from continuing to let it pester me; it's not as if it had a realistic chance of eventually delivering an important message from God if I let it continue annoying me. If I actually did miss out on such a message... well... too bad. Maybe God should have chosen a less annoying messenger, then. If you're willing to put up with flies on the off chance one will tell you something important, you do you, but that doesn't mean we reasonable folk are going to follow your lead. It's the same way with MAGA. Every MAGA I've met on Bluesky is just there to get under liberals' and leftists' skin, not have a good-faith conversation. I'm no more obligated to put up with them than I am obligated to put up with a fly buzzing around my head.

    Variation on an Old Joke

Under Democrats, we have free speech. I can stand in the middle of a courtyard at UCLA and shout "Fuck Joe Biden" without getting in trouble. Under the GOP, we also have free speech. I can stand in the middle of a courtyard at Texas A&M and shout "Fuck Joe Biden" without getting in trouble.

    Oops.

That was supposed to be a reply to our resident Mouth of Sauron, not a standalone comment.

    "I was murdered!"

You calling pro-Palestinian activism a "pogrom" is kind of like a white supremacist crying "white genocide" over interracial marriage.
