  Xbox continues its long tradition of being punished because of Microsoft wanting to use it to push unpopular technology, from the full body motion control of the Kinect to the DRM of the One, phone integration of Smartglass, the plan to make the Xbox the TV entertainment hub, to building the Netflix of gaming as part of an ill conceived plan to dominate console and desktop gaming... And the Devs continue to be the ones that suffer. Microsoft will likely learn nothing from this and announce the next Xbox as a cloud streaming box packed with AI, with no disks and no functionality at all without an internet connection.

  They don't want to nationalise them, they want to nationalise their bad debts when the bubble bursts. The government owned shares will give them room to say they absolutely have to give them trillions of dollars to protect the taxpayer's stake, and in return Altman, Elon, Elison and co will spend hundreds of millions of that money on republican campaigns and on democratic primaries to try and unseat progressives in 2028.

  Can't help but feel they wouldn't have gotten quite so much pushbak if they hadn't one so immediately free pulling films from the libraries of people go believed they'd paid to own them. You don't immediately do something that requires trust after violating the trust of your audience and expect them to be fine.

  It is pretty much guaranteed at this point that by the time the 2028 elections come around, broadcasters and platforms will start to refuse to run adverts by democrats, either because they are owned by oligarchs and no longer feel they have to or because they are afraid of being sued or part of a targeted harassment campaign by the FCC.

  Guy was one of many people involved in the start of Wikipedia, left in a snit to start rival project after rival project more in line with his personal vision, each dying a death because his vision doesn't make for a useful website with a thriving community. After these sites rotted on the vine, he decided to do return, contribute nothing worthwhile for years and right wing media tours to help signal boost right wing attempts to attack the site because they won't let them hijack the site the way they have everything else. He's the intellectual equivalent of a J6er, he openly tried to do a coup, got punished because the rules should be applied equally regardless of political beliefs, and expects sympathy, only there's no Trump to wave the get out of consequences free card for him.

  I'd say that's a bit unfair, Elon is a financier who was fortunate enough to be active in the era where legacy tech and media were spending silly money on garbage dotcom startups. Sweeney, for all his faults, built Epic from a Shareware producer to what it is now and helped code a lot of the products that got them there, doing 90% of Unreal engine 1 himself. He'd a douchebag, don't get me wrong, just like his peer John Carmack, but he's not a poser like Elon.

  The fact Sweeney is willing to destroy the ecosystem of asset packs, textures and tools that have built a thriving indy dev scene is even more sh-tty than his constant digs at Steam and people who have genuine issues with AI usage. We keep being told that AI will make becoming a game dev in everyone's reach, and that it will help solo Devs by saving them money on hiring artists... While selling the destruction of the market for cheap assets that enable freelance artists to stay employed between gigs and has helped the indie dev ecosystem grow to the size it is to day, something he should appreciate more given Epic's shareware origins... But no, he wants all the money.

  There is nothing AI enthusiasts hate more that informed consent and that tells you a lot about who they are as people. What other people want doesn't matter, their love of their new toy is the only factor worthy of consideration in their eyes. If I were hit on in a bar by someone into AI, I would make sure to keep my drink covered at all times.

  The nightmare scenario keeping AI and VC types awake at night is america getting a government that will defend creator rights and won't bail them out as what they are selling is not something people want or need, and local governments blocking datacenter expansion.

  They backed Trump because the vast majority of them came from the crypto world and they knew full well he was for sale at a ridiculously cheap price. Under him, crime would become legal for the wealthy and they would remove all pretense that it wasn't the case, and they would be allowed to infiltrate government to the point that when the bubble bursts, they would be bailed out, no questions asked. They underestimated the fact he would react negatively to even pretend pushback from companies like Anthropic, because he is a child who believes Kayfabe is real and the world revolves around him.
