One Way To Deal With A Cease & Desist: Wicked Lasers Auctioning Off LucasFilm C&D
from the will-they-get-a-C&D-for-that-too? dept
We recently wrote about the cease & desist letter that LucasFilm sent Wicked Lasers for making a laser that various blogs (not Wicked Lasers itself) compared to a light saber. Wicked Lasers has apparently responded by doing the only reasonable thing: it's auctioning the cease & desist off on eBay. You can bid on it here. How nice would it be if it became a trend to auction off bogus cease and desist letters?
Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Re: Bids
I can imagine all sorts of scams though. One company secretly works with another company in the background and sends a C&D letter, the recipient sells it, and they split the profits.

they can claim copyright so no one can make an exact copy but it doesnt stop wicked lasers getting over $600 for something which they got for free and which probably cost LucasFilm more than $600 in lawyers fee's and a little bit of bad press.

I wonder if I could fund the purchase by getting myself sued by Lucas somehow.
At least he's not claiming Star Wars didn't make money to keep royalty checks from an 89 year old actor this time.
