Funniest/Most Insightful Comments Of The Week At Techdirt

from the on-the-grapevine dept

This week, our first place winner on the insightful side is MrWilson with a comment about the failure to get indictments in supposed ICE assaults:

And the fact that prosecutors and grand juries didn’t find evidence of actual assault in so many cases proves ICE’s assault statistics are bullshit. If you read other articles on the failure to push to trial, they note that a lot of the footage contradicted the testimony of the officers. The claims of assault turned out to be descriptions of the officers assaulting the protesters.

Remember this the next time someone comes into the comments clutching their pearls about assaults on our brave dedicated federal officers, bravely dedicated to assaulting people and lying about it.

In second place, it’s a simple anonymous comment about Axios’s approach to covering Trump:

Treating fact and fiction as equal sides is bias favoring fiction.

For editor’s choice on the insightful side, we start out with an anonymous comment about copyright and AI:

The message here isn’t so much “support AI everything” as “‘limiting AI-generated free speech’ is a strict subset of ’limit free speech”.

If the AI thing isn’t substantially similar to any extant copyrighted work, or its derivation from copyrighted works is fair use, then it’s usually okay. It might be slop, it might be in poor taste, etc. but we shouldn’t sacrifice free speech on the altar of “but I don’t like that speech”, or you open up the option of censorship for whoever’s in power, which is currently more obviously a bad idea than usual.

Next, it’s iria64 with a comment about the installation of a “Bias Monitor” at CBS:

They should just call it what it is… “Political Officer”

Over on the funny side, our first place winner is Strawb with a comment about Oklahoma Superintendent Ryan Walters and his defensive response after broadcasting nudity to a meeting:

Why am I not surprised he doesn’t know what a naked woman looks like?

In second place, it’s Pixelation with a comment about the DHS using the Bible to pretend god hates migrants:

And God better keep pushing that narrative or Trump will sue him.

For editor’s choice on the funny side, we start out with a reply from settsu to a comment about welfare handouts being popular among people who don’t pay taxes:

9 out of 10 billionaires heartily agree!

Finally, it’s another (this time anonymous) comment about Ryan Walters:

Hoist by his own pornhub.

That’s all for this week, folks!

Re:

If you were honestly confused and earnestly wanted it explained to you, there are plenty of people willing to educate you and plenty of resources you could seek out. But you’re certain in your dogma that you’re definitely right because otherwise thinking about complex issues would hurt your brain and you need it to be simple.

Did you know that even “biological sex” isn’t binary? Did you know gasoline isn’t made out of dinosaurs? Did you know that the earth isn’t actually round but rather an oblate spheroid? There’s plenty more you didn’t learn with your 1950s elementary school education.

Re: Re:

No, I’m certain in my dogma because I’m definitely right. People can only ever be the sex of their bodies. No amount of makeup, clothing, medicine, or surgery can ever change that. No one is “non-binary”. There are a small number of people with genetic and developmental sex disorders, but they are just broken versions of normal people, and in no case does their condition apply to people with normal bodies who have delusions or strong wishes about being the opposite sex.

Re: Re: Re:

Disorders is a subjective, biased term. There are alternate chromosomal configurations and they are normal because they occur and in large enough numbers in the population to be considered common. They constitute other sexes than the binary.

The bible isn’t a science textbook.

Re: Re: Re:2

What does the bible have to do with anything? Why would anyone use a book of mythology as a guide to human biology?

The reason people with genetic or developmental sex disorders are broken versions of normal people is that their disorders lead them to have broken versions of normal bodies. They don’t contribute anything new or different to human reproduction, they just don’t work properly. Blind people don’t have a different kind of sight and deaf people don’t have a different kind of hearing. They’re just broken. And in any case, broken physiology is separate from broken psychology.

Good question. Why are you doing that? Binary sex as a concept in Western cultures derives from a Christian or biblical perspective that God made man and woman.

The reason people with genetic or developmental sex disorders are broken versions of normal people is that their disorders lead them to have broken versions of normal bodies.

That’s circular logic. “They’re not normal because they’re not normal.” Normal isn’t a scientific term. It’s just your bias for what you think is “normal.”

They don’t contribute anything new or different to human reproduction,

That’s not a requirement for classification purposes. Sex is determined by chromosomal makeup. They have a different chromosomal makeup than “male and “female.”

Blind people don’t have a different kind of sight and deaf people don’t have a different kind of hearing. They’re just broken.

Bad analogy. Having a different chromosomal makeup isn’t necessarily a disability. And having a disability isn’t abnormal, so even by your unscientific standard, it’s still not logically consistent.

You’re just denigrating people who are different.

And in any case, broken physiology is separate from broken psychology.

“Broken” education is certainly a problem for you it seems.

And 99.9999% of all atoms in the universe are hydrogen and oxygen, therefore all atoms are hydrogen or oxygen, and all other elements are just broken versions of normal atoms.

Re: Re: Re:3

You know people aren’t required to answer your questions or answer them in a format you approve of, right? Especially when it’s clear you’re just a troll who has no interest in engaging with any amount of sincerity. You could have just not commented in the first place and the quality of the discussion would be vastly improved.

Your answer tells us you don’t know what bimodal and dimorphism means. It also tells us you rather ignore factual reality so you can feel secure in your little bubble of stupidity and simplicity. You are a simpleton that can’t stand the complexities of the world and have a need to reduce them down to simple concepts that you can process.

Re: Sorry, what?

TechDirt has always covered more than ‘just’ tech. Copyright and trademark spring immediately to mind, but there’s plenty of other areas where politics and technology are intrinsically linked.

So, for this week’s content above, Ryan Walters has definitely been exposed by his use (mis-use in office?) of technology. And AI is so definitely ‘technology’ as to be laughable that you missed it. Need I say more?

Re:

If it wasn’t for Trump there would be no content for this post

You’re obviously new here. Back when Trump didn’t come up with new fascist ideas every other day, there were still plenty of funny and insightful posts.

Put some effort into this and focus on technology.

If you care so deeply about accurate names, go tell Fox News to focus on foxes.

But I’m guessing you’re not going to do that, because you don’t actually care about the site’s name. You just care that they’re making fun of your supreme leader.
