Funniest/Most Insightful Comments Of The Week At Techdirt
from the we're-listening dept
This week, our first place winner on the insightful side is MrWilson with a comment about the Trump administration suing Illinois over state laws around immigration enforcement:
Republicans believe in states rights up until states start doing things Republicans don’t like.
In second place, it’s Maura with thoughts on whether or not people voted for Trump to do what he’s doing:
I don’t think that’s correct. Sure there were weekly scandals, but those were caused by “the deep state.” Sure Trump was impeached twice, but that wasn’t his fault, was it? It was those libs and classic conservatives in Congress conspiring against him. As for January 6th, how was that any different, in the opinion of the MAGA faithful, than the rioting after George Floyd? All those criminal trials? DOJ weaponized against him by a vindictive Biden Administration. That’s the kind of stuff people are inundated with. It’s the same kind of stuff that got an otherwise normal dude to drive to a pizza parlor with a gun to “save the children;” it’s the same BS that got poor people to vote republican (when all they wanna do is cut Medicaid funding); and it’s the same BS that motivated many of his supporters to invade the capital in the first place. Valid Information (or lack there of) is a very powerful. That’s why every dictator ever has tried to control it, and Trump and Musk have succeeded.
For editor’s choice on the insightful side, we start out with a comment from That One Guy on the subject of comparing cops to other kinds of emergency responders:
Do firefighters and their unions regularly protest against any attempt to hold their members accountable, and/or defend members engaging in horrific if not lethal actions?
Next, it’s freakanatcha with thoughts on the call for the GOP to stand up to Elon:
I have very low expectations of the GOP, so my criticism is aimed at the Dems.
Why aren’t they flooding every possible media with the practical realities of Trump2.0? No more limp language. Fed. govt. is one of the largest employers in many red districts. Tell the constituents, “When Elmo is done, your district will be looking at 7% UE.” “Shutting USAID will force US farmers into bankruptcy.” “Get ready for grandma to move in when Medicaid cuts close her assisted living facility.”
And last: “Where are the f**kin’ eggs?”
Over on the funny side, our first place winner is an anonymous comment about Trump punishing news outlets for refusing to say “Gulf of America”:
Curious how only in this one instance the Trump Administration is upset about deadnaming.
In second place, it’s another anonymous comment about the renaming:
I couldn’t be happier!
So many Magaheads who are complaining about Latin Americans with an 8th grade education taking their jobs are saying this is what will really solve the immigration issue, grocery costs, inflation, the price of gas, stimulate oil drilling, end the war in Ukraine, get all the hostages freed, and send a clear message to our foes and allies alike that we’re a serious country. (Not to mention grow the GDP by 2% every 5 minutes, cut the deficit by $30 trillion, turn North Korea and Gaza into popular tourist destinations, and eliminate all those damn electric cars.)
Who knew it was so simple?
America, that’s who! An example for the world on how being simple can demand such respect!
For editor’s choice on the funny side, we’ll stay on that post and stick with the anonymous comments for a one-two punch starting with the first comment on the post:
Next up: Trump decrees that the State of New Mexico shall hereby be referred to as “The State of New America”.
…which quickly garnered a reply:
Or maybe “United States of America” to “United States of United States” to prevent people confusing with the American continent.
That’s all for this week, folks!

I voted for Trump to do what he’s doing, and I hope he ramps up the persecution of illegаl аliens, globаlists, and libtаrds.
Re: No, you didn't.
Nope. Your vote did not authorize Trump to do what he’s doing because it only helped elect him president, not dictator. The worst you can claim is that you hoped for Trump to do what he’s doing.
Which is rather pathetic but apparently par for the course.

Re: Re:
Useless semantics.
I pray for our dear leader & POTUS Trump daily. 🙏🇺🇸❤️
Re: Re: Re:
You keep praying, I’m sure that’ll help immensely. Why don’t you devote even more time for it, that way you don’t have to come here.

Re: Re: Re:2
Open your heart, Brother.
Christ is King.
Re: Re: Re:3
Trump would deport Jesus for being a Middle Eastern socialist who cares about the poor and heals the sick without a copay.
Christians who pretend being a conservative is compatible with Jesus’ teachings are the Pharisees he was preaching against.

Re: Re: Re:4
I’ll include you in my prayers tonight, Friend.
Re: Re: Re:5
“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.”
Re: Re: Re:6
Hate has No Place Here, Buddy.
Re: Re: Re:3
Sorry, no…
Re: Re: Re:3
LOL. Y’all would throw Jesus in a camp.
Re: Re: Re:4
Who would Jesus throw in Guantanamo?
Re: Re: Re:5
Himself, apparently. The Lord works in mysterious ways.
Re: Re: Re:4
Considering that Jesus is a Palestinian Jew, The GOP would take his Manger and kill him and his family (a modern kind of Crucifixion, not unlike what the Israelis are doing to the West Bank with our tax dollars).
Re: Re:
Including his plan of ethnically cleansing the Palestinians out of Gaza and his plan to join up with Putin to possibly do the same with the Ukrainians to “resolve” the war there? Yep, I agree.

Re: Re: Re:

How do you people get so much backwards? He wants to give them a place to live
Re: Re: Re:2 sure put em on the rez
Homeboy here never learned any lessons from what was done to the Native Americans
Hell he probably never learned any of what happened
And no one is surprised
Re: Re: Re:2
Sure, and Hitler signed the Haavara Agreement. And we all know how that turned out. Wait, we don’t, because bootlickers never study history except strangely to memorize what year their favorite panzer was manufactured.
And Trump’s Obamacare replacement and infrastructure plans are coming two weeks away, right after Tesla gets actual self-driving features and Half-Life 3 gets released.
Re: Re: Re:2
Not in Gaza, which is their homeland. So it would be like removing all the Native Americans from the US… Oh, shit. I might have given you a bad idea, MAGAt.
Re:
The authoritay of President Cartman is not limited by laws or statutes.
Not just state rights.
Same thing with individual rights, particularly First Amendment rights but not stopping there.
Republican Voltaire would be like “I disagree with what you are saying, but I will defend with my life my entitlement to shut you the fsck up.”
Re:
There’s a reason that Texas is regularly ranked near the bottom of the Cato Institutes Freedom Index.
Re: Re:
Man imagine the economic and cultural powerhouse of a state Texas might have been if they had taxed their oil barons and invested it in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and such.
Instead, it’s become America’s own little oil-funded theocratic desert shithole.
…With cowboy hats!
Who doesn’t love cowboy hats.
Re: Selfishness and self-centeredness that would embarrass a toddler
States rights, free speech/the first amendment, ‘law and order’, the free market… it would be quicker to make a list of things that republicans aren’t hugely vocal fans and supporters of but only so long as it’s in their favor.
Re: Re:
Democracy is a big one. Before the election, MAGA was all “we’re a republic, not a democracy!” (when the answer is that we’re both) and then suddenly they win an election and it’s “this is democracy!” They opposed democracy and called it mob rule (because they didn’t understand the different types of democracy) but now they’re all for it when they can errantly claim a democratic vote created a mandate for autocracy.
Re:
I’m pretty sure it’s:
“While I disagree that I should die, I’ll defend to the death your right to call for my death while handing out pitchforks and torches to people who also think I should die.”

Re: Re:
That seems to be more Stephen’s schtick than David’s. Just an FYI.
Re: Re: Re:
And this is your shtick. Never changes.
Re: Re: Re:2
Not just AC’s schtick, just like it’s not just Stephen’s schtick to try to silence anybody speaking out against hate, as you’ve proved in your comment.

Where are the eggs?
You must have misheard. President Musk and Dolan Turnip have brought down the price of X, not eggs.
WHO SAID IT BEST?
JFK – “Ask not what your country can do for you…”
DJT – “Covfefe”
Also JFK – “He who violates his country saves no law”

Re:
WHO TOOK A BULLET TO THE HEAD BETTER?
Re: Re:
Well, JFK was more vulnerable. He probably carried more brain around than to be found at the whole Trump rally.
Re: Re: Re:
Remember, JFK carried more brain around AFTER he was shot, than to be found at the whole Trump rally.
Re: Re: Re:2
I don’t think Trump is a valid contestant to begin with, as the main criteria is actually having a brain in the first place.
Re: Re:
See, knew it was you guys all along.
Re: Re:
It would appear that the bullet you took to the head missed your brain by 6 feet. And I heard that the paramedics applied CPR to the bullet
Re:
JFK – ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.
DJT’s amendment: ask not your country can do for you; ask what your country can do you for.
Re: Re:
I don’t get the vibe that he bothers with asking. Certainly not for permission, but not for forgiveness either.
Re: Re: Re: A monarch
A monarch needs neither permission (according the gutless GOP), nor forgiveness (according to SCOTUS).
Welcome to the world of Trump Rex.
