The Real ‘Gulf Of America’ Is Between The News Outlets That Cover This Administration

from the collective-inaction dept

Way back in the far more innocent times of 2012, we covered a brief but tense dispute between Google and Iran over the lack of a label for the Persian Gulf on Google Maps. Ostensibly so as not to upset anyone about the name of that body of water, given that there was some dispute over its name, Google just left it blank. Iran, not exactly known for its patience when it comes to perceived insults from the West, threatened to sue over it all. We had a bit of a laugh at that, wondering aloud both how any such lawsuit would work and, importantly, how any national government could be that petty about what appears on a map.

Fast forward to this week, when credentialed AP News reporters were barred from several press events in the White House. Why? Well, because the AP has refused to update its Stylebook, followed by a ton of other news outlets, to call the Gulf of Mexico by its newly decreed name, the Gulf of America.

The White House said Wednesday that news organizations that refuse to use President Donald Trump’s new name for the Gulf of Mexico were telling “lies” and insisted it would continue to bar Associated Press journalists from presidential events.

Trump has decreed that the international body of water — which borders Mexico, the United States and other nations — be called the Gulf of America. In its influential Stylebook, the AP said it would continue to use Gulf of Mexico, while also noting Trump’s decision, to ensure that names of geographical features are recognizable around the world.

This is all equal parts silly, dangerous, and twice an obvious infringement of the First Amendment. The silly portion of this is the most obvious. Taking any action against literally anyone simply because they don’t recognize that Trump put his scrawled signature on a piece of paper that renames an international body of water is beyond petty. That the Department of the Interior went along with this lunacy means nothing at all. That body of water has been named the Gulf of Mexico for something like four centuries. Trump’s EO doesn’t even rename the entire body of water; it intends only to rename the continental shelf portion of the body. Are you seeing how stupid this all is yet?

So why is it dangerous? Because the Orwellian themes are starting to be delivered at such a velocity that the term “Orwellian” is becoming stale. While the concept of “doublespeak” only tangentially comes from Orwell, it’s omnipresent in the administration’s comments on this whole dispute, as it also is with the talking heads the administration deploys to news outlets covering it. Calling the Gulf of Mexico by its historical name is not “telling lies.” In fact, saying so is a lie in and of itself, which is classic doublespeak. And we got even more doublespeak directly from Trump’s Press Secretary.

At a regular briefing Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that “it is a fact that the body of water off the coast of Louisiana is called the Gulf of America, and I’m not sure why news outlets don’t want to call it that.”

This will result in a lawsuit, of that I have no doubt. The barring of reporters in retaliation for their protected speech is, as I said earlier, twice a violation of the First Amendment. It is both an attempt by a government body to regulate the protected speech , as well as an attempt to punish the press over that speech. All the constitutional lawyers and professors I’ve heard speak on this topic have spoken in unison: this is an open and shut case. CNN went through a similar issue when the first Trump administration revoked Jim Acosta’s press pass due to his tough questions (though a lame attempt to accuse him of pushing an intern’s arm was made as well), only to back down due to the lawsuit CNN filed.

Now, here’s where there is a real “Gulf of America”: among the press outlets covering this administration. While many news organizations out there follow the AP Stylebook, not all of them do. Here are some examples directly from the AP article, in fact.

—The New York Times said it would continue to use Gulf of Mexico, while noting Trump’s renaming in stories that discuss that issue. The gulf, which borders Mexico and Cuba as well as the United States, has been known as the Gulf of Mexico for more than 400 years.

—The Washington Post also said it would use Gulf of Mexico in most references because it “is not solely within the United States’ jurisdiction and the name of Gulf of America might confuse global readers.”

—Fox News said that, starting Sunday, it would use Gulf of America in all of its references.

In a real, well-functioning press pool, there would be an entirely different reaction to all of this. And that reaction would be for the different press outlets to band together and boycott Presidential briefings until the AP’s access and credentials were restored. All of these outlets live or die by the First Amendment, after all, and it should be the case that an attack on one of them is seen as an attack on all of them. Collective action is what we need here, but we are instead seeing collective inaction. If Fox News, for instance, wanted to act like an adult journalistic outfit, it would be joining other outlets and leading the damned charge on pressuring the administration to stop punishing other press outlets.

But if you can’t get that kind of action out of CNN, there’s fat chance of that happening.

Re: Re:

That’s some next-level thinking, right there!

We could simplify maps even further (are you listening, Doge-daddy?) by renaming the Pacific and Atlantic oceans to the American Ocean. One name, one common goal, and no more kids getting that geography question wrong anymore.

One more step to get the ‘stupid’ out of Americans by simply dumbing things down to their level.

Re:

We can only hope!

It’s in true Trump/Elon form to issue such an order without considering the effect it will have on their Drivers’ Licenses, addresses, zip codes – you get it.

But just think of how it will stimulate funds for the wall and favorably change our trade deficits resulting from the incompetence of the administrations that renegotiated the terrible NAFTA and USMCA deals…I think a little chaos in New Murica is worth it.

Re: Re:

That’s okay. It’s likely that they are being RIF’d in the near future, along with everyone else in government who Does Something.

I am surprised that the IRS, ICE, and CBP have not already been RIF’d as well. Are they not under the executive?

Anonymous Coward says:

Re: Re: Re:

If he does an RIF for ICE & CBP, it’ll only make the pathetic deportation numbers for his crack squad of assholes tank further. At the rate they’re going he’ll be close to 90 when they’re done with this batch of 11 million.

But, if he actually solves the ‘immigrant problem’ they’re going to have to make another thing to complain about. Because why be a republican if you don’t have a boogeyman to be scared shitless of?

So I guess it’s maybe 50/50.

I couldn’t be happier!

So many Magaheads who are complaining about Latin Americans with an 8th grade education taking their jobs are saying this is what will really solve the immigration issue, grocery costs, inflation, the price of gas, stimulate oil drilling, end the war in Ukraine, get all the hostages freed, and send a clear message to our foes and allies alike that we’re a serious country. (Not to mention grow the GDP by 2% every 5 minutes, cut the deficit by $30 trillion, turn North Korea and Gaza into popular tourist destinations, and eliminate all those damn electric cars.)

Who knew it was so simple?

America, that’s who! An example for the world on how being simple can demand such respect!

Anonymous Coward says:

Re: Re:

If Hispanics with 8th grade educations are actually taking American jobs, that says a lot about the American education system.

Don’t worry! America has a simple solution for fixing its pathetic education system, too!

We’re in the process of disbanding it. Isn’t that the most incredible solution ever? Now the Americans who are being denied the American dream by being locked out of the melon picking, bean picking, and chicken packing industries won’t be burdened with those pesky department of education minimum requirements anymore.

No sir!

They can get their education at home, where it should be. Now stupid parents can mold their children into their own image and give them the things the public school system refuses to – information about the 10 commandments and the bible.

That’s all they need to get those high-paying chicken-feather-plucking jobs, and I expect the demise of the Department of Education to streamline that process. Not to mention the freedom that it gives parents to properly pass on their legacy of stupidity to their kids, so that they can enjoy the prosperity that they have.

And they’re both right.
The Gulf of Mexico includes Mexico and Cuba coastlines.
The Gulf of America only includes US coastlines (about half of The Gulf of Mexico borders).
It depends of the context, and definitions should always predate discussion.

Re:

I was thinking on the whole “make Canada an American state” thing, and one of the possible reasons for that bullshit hit me like a ton of bricks. Puerto Rico has always been the big frontrunner for admittance into the U.S. as a new state, but not only is the population much smaller than that of Canada’s, it’s also…well, to put it bluntly, it’s a lot browner than Canada’s. Population trends in the U.S. indicate that white people will no longer be the majority of the country’s population (though it will remain the largest racial demographic) within a few decades.

Trump’s desire to annex Canada might, on the surface, be about trade disagreements or a Putin-esque desire to conquer a sovereign nation. But beneath that exterior justification, that desire could be about something far more base and disgusting: bolstering the white population of the U.S. as a means of holding off the so-called Great Replacement that Trump asskissers like Stephen Miller and Tucker Carlson are so worried about. Given how Trump has those two and his aparatheid-loving co-president Elon Musk in his ear and how Trump has a well-documented history of racism, this idea doesn’t sound like something truly out of left field, at least to me.

Me too – Musk and little buddy Trump are closet socialists coming for our top notch healthcare and will replace it with Canada’s system.

Why is it that Democrats always claim that everything is about race?

We don’t. Sometimes it’s about sex, sometimes it’s about gender, sometimes it’s about “owning the libs”, sometimes it’s about money, etc.

Even our roads are racist, […]

When you name the roads after people who fought to preserve slavery, then yeah, the roads are kinda racist. That’s not as ridiculous as you think it sounds.

[…] climate change is racist, […]

Haven’t heard that one.

Most of us find that really strange, […]

Because you can’t be bothered to figure out why.

yeah, this ‘Gulf’ issue is silly and trivial — BUT claiming it’s somehow a 1ST Amendment issue is just as silly.

Nobody in the government is stopping AP from using whatever geographic labels they choose.

A little pushback on AP WhiteHouse access privileges is perfectly legal.

AP is also notorious for politically biased language in its news reporting.

CNN demonstrated that is not actually the case.

AP is also notorious for politically biased language in its news reporting.

Even if that were true, so what? Fox, OAN and Newsmax are also notorious for politically biased language in their news reporting. I doubt you have any concerns about them.

Re:

The First Amendment denies the Federal government the authority to unilaterally select who and how they will interact with citizen.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Right there, in bold, it clearly denies the government the ability to abridge peoples petitioning of the government. This isn’t hard. It only requires basic English reading comprehension… and honesty.

Anonymous Coward says:

Re:

Yeah, that’s because they’ve been taking taxpayer money from the government. Don’t expect it to change overnight though since Trump cut their gravy train off. Over the years they’ve also stacked these news outlets with nothing but far left employees. Some won’t even hire a Republican, so I look for all the propaganda to linger until some of these folks are out of a job.

Re:

When the government restricts their access to information based on the geographical labels they choose, it’s a 1A issue.

A little pushback on AP WhiteHouse access privileges is perfectly legal.

Not if it’s done in retaliation over their protected expression.

AP is also notorious for politically biased language in its news reporting.

Honest question: is any news source not notorious for politically biased language in their news reporting in your eyes? Because AP doesn’t seem to have such bias most of the time, at least not in any particular direction.

At any rate, being politically biased is also protected and so isn’t a valid reason to restrict access privileges, either.

Anonymous Coward says:

Because the press isn’t about reporting news. It’s about reporting what will earn listeners and viewers.

The press loves Trump. They worked their asses off to promote him and downplay his dumbest moments. And not because they thought he’d be friendly to them – they’re not stupid, they knew he’d never forgive them for not scrubbing anything that people didn’t like about him being publicized. But because people were hooked to the newsstand and TV to learn what incredible degeneracy he was saying/doing next.

He’s big business for them. And if the cost of that business is that the entire republic collapses, it’s worth it to them.

Drew Wilson (user link) says:

Re:

they’re not stupid

The link tax debate in previous years has me thinking otherwise. They argued that social media is wholly dependent on news content for their success (which is wrong). They argued that linking to them is stealing (which is wrong on numerous levels). They argued that the platforms would have no choice but to negotiate “deals” to pay for linking (that never happened in either Canada or the US). They tried boycotting the platforms (all of which failed at downright comical levels). The end result was that, in some cases, they got themselves kicked off the platforms, shooting their own foot in the process (as is the case with Meta and Canadian news links). With respect to Canada, the end result of that was that they became wholly dependent on Canadian government bailouts to keep them in business. The current (unfortunate) political frontrunner is chomping at the bit to immediately cut funding to the media afterwards, potentially wiping out a huge chunk of the press corp in the process.

With respect to the US, though, I think the press legitimately thought that Trump wasn’t really going to go through what he said he was going to go through with. Like you, I think they thought it was going to give them better ratings when the US slips into tyranny. Yet, Trump has said it himself that he is wanting to jail reporters for daring to hurt his feelings. With how things are already escalating, we aren’t that far off from the press being required to tow the Trump propaganda line or being forced to shut down. I doubt this is going to be beneficial to the press over the long term.

That’s not how names of international bodies of water work at all.

I suppose King BabyHands could rename the Eastern costal waters to “American Ocean” and the Western coastal waters to “USA Ocean” but only where it includes US coastlines, right?

Whoa there, buddy! Let’s pump the brakes a bit, here.

Why would the Atlantic and Pacific oceans need separate names? We’re a simple people and we want our maps to be just as simple as we are. Let’s just call both of them the American Ocean. The oceans are already connected, so why make the distinction?

‘If you dare to insist that the emperor has no clothes your first amendment rights are null and void!’

While I don’t expect the momentary resistance to last it would be nice of the news outlets actually stuck to their guns and called the WH’s bluff here, not only suing but refusing to show up at the WH press releases even if they won, with a public explanation that showing up would be giving the WH far more credibility than they deserve.

Re:

AP didn’t get kicked out of the press briefing room, they were kicked out of the oval office. There’s a big difference there. Matter of fact, the AP was in the press briefing room when the press secretary was asked about it and the President has every right to decide who can be in the oval. It’s a privilege, not a right.

You’re just spreading false info. The AP reporter was banned from the Oval office, not the press briefing room. As a matter of fact, the AP was in the room when the press secretary was asked about it. Also, wasn’t it Democrats getting all bent out of shape over people not using the correct “pronouns”? Democrats seem so offended because Trump changed the name of the gulf, but had nothing to say when Dems changed the name of military bases, schools, statues, and even bullied sports teams into changing their names. It was crickets then. It seems like anything putting America first causes Dems to have a complete meltdown.
