Funniest/Most Insightful Comments Of The Week At Techdirt

from the so-you-say dept

This week, both top spots on the insightful side were taken by similar comments from That One Guy. In first place, it’s a comment about the subject of free speech in the Vice Presidential debate:

Broken finger vs Severed arm

I mean, neither came out looking great with regards to the first amendment but whereas Walz botched what is and is not covered under the first amendment Vance was conflating platforms dealing with insurrectionists as ‘censorship’ and refusing to admit that convicted felon Trump lost the last election, so yeah, both bad, but bad in very different ways and levels.

In second place, it’s a comment making the same point in reply to another take on the distinction:

One of them repeated a long-debunked saying that is sadly still common among people ignorant or dishonest about the first amendment, the other refused to acknowledge an insurrection and the lie that caused it.

‘Only marginally better’ would not be the phrasing I’d use.

For editor’s choice on the insightful side, we start out with an anonymous comment about the idea that social media is biased against conservatives:

The most frustrating thing about this entire topic is how many moderates or even (actual, not pretend) liberals end up falling for it. I regularly see even actual liberals saying it as “common sense”, regardless of how much actual evidence you shove down their throats.

It’s a very strong lesson in how effective misinformation and working the refs can be, that it still works on people who should be, if anything, primed against it.

Next, it’s Toom1275 with a comment about the other pervasive belief about social media:

The “Social media is killing kids” cult operates in much the same way as the antivax cult does – centered around a handful of frauds peddling falsehoods for personal gain, and an army if sheep who swallow it down without a single critical thought.

Over on the funny side, our first place winner is an anonymous comment about the cop who got his gun stuck in an MRI machine:

I hope people call this idiot Magneto for the rest of his days.

In second place, it’s PB&J with a comment on our post about Musk’s claim that subsidizing Starlink would have saved Hurricane Helene victims:

Ummm, I’d just like to say that I also donated 1000 Starlink satellite access kits to the Carolinas! Sure I did! I guarantee it!

(hey, “The rules were that you guys weren’t going to fact-check!”)

For editor’s choice on the funny side, we start out with a comment from Anomalous Cowherd about the incorrect free speech trope that Walz invoked at the debate:

Every time I find myself part of a group huddled around a campfire on the beach I get an uncontrollable urge to run around screaming “Theatre!,” which upsets some people. Have I been doing it wrong?

Finally, it’s Daydream with another comment about the aforementioned Magneto cop:

So what I’ve learned from this is you can disarm a cop via use of a giant cartoon magnet.

That’s all for this week, folks!

Re: Re: Re:

We should be worried! I don’t care what the NY Times and WaPo “report”, Trump has a good chance of winning, and if he and his dark maga allies take power, it’s Game Over for Democracy. They’ll massacre our constitutional rights and persecute political enemies like Joe Biden, who Trump would love to send to a SuperMax. Very distressing times.

Re: Re: Re:2

You shouldn’t entirely discredit the news. Out of everything happening, a Trump victory is probably the thing I least worry about happening currently.

At least it feels like the US stands a chance.

Ironically I live in a country that’s managed to entirely evade the far right thing, but it’s distressing to see it happen everywhere else on the continent.

Re: Re: Re:3

doom posting
“When someone expects the worst possible scenario, regardless of there being evidence to support them. The poster will usually mention that they hope it doesn’t happen. However, everything they say always reeks of pessimism.”
i think the ac your replying to might be starting to resort to this

Re: Re: Re:4

I can understand it too, I fall into that pit myself at times, admittedly.

Usually doomposting (in my case) is a deeply anxious state where you’re just yelling out your doomsday predictions while internally hoping someone can (and will) prove you factually wrong.

Of course, combined that with topics where no one really knows the odds of outcomes for certain, and you have a disaster-recipe for anxiety spirals and endless defeatism.

Re: Re: Re:7

Main thing that hampers it for me is my brain’s annoying tendency to go “This might be going away soon so why bother enjoying it?”

Nothing lasts forever. On a long enough timeline, everything ends—your life, for example, will end well before civilization, humanity as a whole, all life on this planet, the planet itself, the solar system, the galaxy, and the universe. All you have is the moment before you. If you spend all your time worrying about when things are going to end, you’ll never spend time enjoying things while you have them.

Am I worried about Trump winning again? Yes. That’s why I plan to vote for Kamala (as well as every Democrat on the rest of my ballot). But I’m not worrying so much about a Trump win that I’m spending all my time thinking about what’ll happen after he wins in the most pessimistic light. I don’t want to put myself in a loop of despair because it does FUCK-ALL to help me do anything other than that.

Both you and all the other people who keep doomposting and worrying about everything from KOSA to the death of 230 need to log off the Internet for a while. Whether this doomposting is performative or genuine, staying on the Internet and scrolling through/reading/watching the news clearly isn’t helping y’all. I know the “touch grass” thing is meant to be insulting, but at this point, it’s about the best recommendation I can give you for getting your shit together. You aren’t going to be of any use to anyone if you drive yourself crazy with despair and worry. And if you’re being performative about your worries, you’re not helping anyone else with this fake-ass bullshit that’s meant to drive people into despair and worry.

You have more to lose by continually exposing yourself (or others) to negativity and locking yourself (or others) into negative thought loops than you do by touching grass. So get off the fucking Internet and get acquainted with nature.

Re: Re: Re:9

Voicing your anxieties and worrying about things is fine. But when you do nothing but worry about things you can’t control and voice nothing but your anxities, you’re spiraling into a defeatist mindset. You can’t keep going like that without destroying yourself in some fashion. Staying stressed out doesn’t do you, or anyone else, any favors.

As I’ve said, I’m worried about a Trump victory in November. But I’m not letting that worry take over my life. I’d be useless to everyone, including myself, if I did. The best things I can are voice my concerns, stay informed (without doomscrolling), and try to live my life as best I can in the moment. Worrying about the future so much that I psychologically unravel is stupid. For all I know, a helicopter could crash into my house tomorrow and all my worrying wouldn’t amount to any-fuckin’-thing.

Worrying to some degree is fine. Worrying to the exclusion of all other emotions and mindsets will destroy you. Stop hurting yourself and start doing something other than doomscrolling on Twitter. Self-harm is not a viable coping mechanism.

Re: Re: Re:2

No, Trump does not have a good chance of winning, he doesn’t even have a chance in Hell of winning… fairly and squarely. What he does have is a good chance of having his fanatics steal the election by virtue of threatening voters who might turn out to vote for Harris. He and his minions have also learned from experience just how to manipulate the election from behind the cyclone fences where the votes are tabulated, and the results carried to the next level up the chain. That’s where I’m most worried that things will end up in court, so thoroughly mired in confusion and accusations that we won’t know until next year just what happened, and who came out on top.

Countering that, I’m also confident that come January 6th, we’ll see a lot of anti-riot personnel on the streets surrounding the Capitol building. Just as importantly, we won’t see Trump on a podium somewhere in DC, trying to stir up another J6 insurrection. He’ll be behind bars, mark my words.

I wish I shared your optimism, but I do hope and pray he’s remanded into custody A.S.A.P. We can’t afford to wait for all of his trials to be decided (or even begin, I guess).

It’s an abomination that he’s even allowed to campaign freely, crisscrossing the country and speaking freely to such large crowds of citizen-fascists…

Nope. Fuck that noise. Trump must be given a fair trial and convicted by a jury and sentenced within the norms of our justice system. Otherwise, the conservatives will have every excuse they already wish they had to bypass the same legal protections for their political enemies when they’re next in power. You’re encouraging fascism to fight fascism.

Re: Re: Re:6

Except the charges he’s been convicted of haven’t been appealed in court yet. He still has due process rights that haven’t played out yet. Also, it’s likely he won’t receive prison time for the hush money conviction because he’s a first time convicted offender, older, and it would be perceived as politically charged.

I want to see him convicted of the crimes he has committed and sent to prison for them, but you have to let the system work. Calling for extrajudicial action undermines any conviction or sentencing he might receive. You’re giving ammo to his supporters who falsely claim that his prosecutions are politically motivated. If Harris or Biden or anyone else did the same thing as Trump, they should likewise be convicted with due process. You can’t just pick and choose who gets fair treatment and who gets expedited authoritarian “justice.”

Re:

Let’s just hope that Trump is imprisoned before next month

With the way cases have gone with delays (Jan 6th case was SCOTUS delay, documents case was thrown out by Cannon but appeals will take longer to get it reinstated, NYC fraud case judge delayed sentencing until post-election, Georgia is paused at Appeals court over disqualifying Fani Willis or not), there is no reasonable chance any of them result in prison before the election. We’re going to have to beat him first, they’ve all been punted.

Don’t hope, vote, and if you’re up to it get as many friends and family as you can to vote against him to do so as well.

While him ending up in a cell would certainly be nice (and long overdue) barring that automatically disqualifying him from office(and if being a convicted felon doesn’t do it I doubt being in a cell would) if enough non-republicans sit on their ass and/or enough republican vote rigging goes unchallenged him being convicted would only be a temporary fix.

The best way to keep him from turning the US into a fascist hellscape is to keep him(and any other MAGAt republican) out of office.
