Another Report Undercuts The Constant Narrative That US Crime Rates Are Out Of Control
from the fear-is-always-a-seller's-market dept
For as long as the evening news has existed, America has been portrayed as a dangerous place to live. Reminding people we’re a very safe country — especially over the past 30 years — doesn’t draw in viewers.
And it doesn’t draw in voters, either. Among the many, many, many things Donald Trump lied about in his mid-July news conference is the violent crime rate in this country. (He also claimed his opponent, vice president Kamala Harris is weak on crime, despite her long history as a prosecutor.)
I think our country right now is in the most dangerous position it’s ever been in from an economic standpoint, from a safety standpoint, both gangs on the street and frankly, gangs outside of our country in the form of other countries that are, frankly, very powerful. They’re very powerful countries.
I won’t speculate as to the nature of “gangs outside of our country,” especially those in the “frankly very powerful” countries. But it’s patently false to claim the US is in the “most dangerous position it’s ever been in… from a safety standpoint.”
This sort of thing has been said repeatedly by Trump. There are variations on the theme, but the theme remains the same, no matter what the data actually says. While there was a noticeable increase in crime in 2020 during the COVID pandemic, crime rates did not increase everywhere in the country. What spikes were observed during that year have mostly receded. And, it must be noted, this happened during Donald Trump’s presidency, despite the promise he made at the beginning of his term to turn this country into a nation that automatically gives officers all the respect they’ve failed to earn on their own.
Meanwhile, social media and legacy news media outlets have contributed their part to this false narrative by insisting that viral videos of anomalous criminal behavior is representative of the nation as a whole.
The FBI’s most recent data — the Uniform Crime Report (UCR) — shows double-digit decreases across the board in violent crime and property crime rates.
A comparison of data from agencies that voluntarily submitted at least two or more common months of data for January through March 2023 and 2024 indicates reported violent crime decreased by 15.2 percent. Murder decreased by 26.4 percent, rape decreased by 25.7 percent, robbery decreased by 17.8 percent, and aggravated assault decreased by 12.5 percent. Reported property crime also decreased by 15.1 percent.
This report is far from complete. Participation by US law enforcement agencies is barely over 70%. Additionally, the FBI revamped its crime categorization, which may result in some crimes being over- or under-reported until every reporting law enforcement agency is on the same page in terms of crime classification.
But it still looks like pretty good news, even though you’ll never hear it from the alarmists and opportunists who seem to always have access to the largest megaphones.
More data has been released by another agency that compiles its own crime rate reporting. The Major Cities Chiefs Association’s report [PDF] covers 69 of the nation’s largest cities. And the drops in crime rates covered here are precipitous.
54 of the 69 major cities in the report saw drops in violent crime — defined as homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault — in the first half of 2024, according to the Axios review.
Columbus, Ohio, experienced the largest percentage decline in violent crime in the nation, with a massive 41% drop so far in 2024. Omaha, Nebraska, was second with a 30% decrease.
Miami and Washington, D.C., so far, have seen 29% declines in violent crime.
Austin, Texas, saw a 28% drop, followed by New Orleans with a 26% decrease.
On top of that, Boston saw a 78% decrease in homicides. And Philadelphia — a city tough-on-crime types like to bash because of its election of a “progressive” district attorney — saw a 42% drop in homicides over the same period.
The data contradicts the narrative. But the narrative is often the only thing most people will pay attention to. Crime rates peaked in the early-1990s and have been decreasing steadily since then. Contrary to Trump’s assertions, this nation is in the safest position it’s ever been in, in terms of crime rates. More people should be made aware of these facts and adjust their actions accordingly. There’s no reason we, as a nation, should continue to put up with powerful and influential people who continue to insist otherwise.

Crime rates are through the roof!!
Oh, and the election was stolen from Trump. Vaccines are a commie plot. Democrats eat babies on pizza. The list is endless.
Re:
The “Democrats eat babies on pizza” is a myth. The Modest Proposal Pizza was never actually put into production due to problems sourcing ingredients. … and the end of the Irish Potato Famine.
Republicans have used the law ‘n order, crime is outta control bit for as long as I have watched the news, read the paper and in the past several decades, view websites.
According to several studies, the crime rate has been slowly decreasing that entire time. Some speculate it is due, in part, to the elimination/reduction of lead in our environment.
The political hacks seem to be very slow on the uptick as evidenced by their lack of new material, they are still using the old and tired, like donald, crime is outta control thing.
Kinda funny that donald is talking like he is still running against Biden.
Every day, health, weather, and schedule permitting, I go on a walk around my neighborhood here in the Democratic People’s Republic of California. It’s about two miles. I must say I agree with President Trump; crime is rampant. I can’t remember the last time I walked down the main road without seeing someone speed or fail to signal a turn–and don’t get me started on the jaywalking and littering. I even regularly see a homeless person! I thought we outlawed those!
Re:
Well, at least they are sweeping the forest now – right?
Just like donald said:
“I see again the forest fires are starting,”
“They’re starting again in California. I said, you gotta clean your floors, you gotta clean your forests — there are many, many years of leaves and broken trees and they’re like, like, so flammable, you touch them and it goes up.”

Don't forget Hell-, erm, I mean Chicago....
My home city is every GOPers favorite pinata to whack at. All despite the fact that the current homicide rate in Chicago is 2/3 of what it was in 1992 when — checks notes — Republican George H. W. Bush was in office and is 20% less than in 2020 when — checks notes — noted non-Democrat Donald Trump was in office.

Re:
Huh, funny way to spell the word ‘turdpile’. 🤔
If your only news source is Fox or Sinclair, you’d never know this and would believe the opposite because it’s repeated so often.
“More Evidence Indicates GOP Alternate Reality Still Doesn’t Actually Exist”
"It's the economy, stupid"
That was true 30+ years ago and it’s still true now. People who can earn a decent living, people who see opportunities for advancement, people who see a future for themselves and for their children, people with things to do and something to look forward to, are unlikely to turn to crime. So if you want crime rates to go down, you don’t hire 5000 more useless cops (a significant number of which will commit crimes): you raise the minimum wage, you make healthcare affordable, you spend a fortune on education, you build affordable housing, you do the things that give people life and hope.
It’s much cheaper to do all these things than it is to operate the machinery prosecution and imprisonment. It’s much better for society. And it benefits EVERYONE, including the people that it doesn’t directly affect, because those people are less likely to be crime victims if there are fewer crimes being committed.
Republicans of course hate this, and call it socialism and communism and everything else. They WANT the crime rate high because it ensures a permanent underclass on whose backs they can acquire wealth. They’re perfectly fine with 300 million Americans suffering through their entire lives…as long as they, the rich white straight white people, can have their mansions and yachts.
They are the worst people in the country, and it’s not even close.
Re:
I don’t think so. Just education alone there are cities spending billions on and aren’t getting anywhere. I think Chicago is one of them and over 70% of the kids can’t read or do math so money isn’t the answer. When crime was out of control in New york, Rudi got in office and reduced the crime rates dramatically with policing and prosecuting crime.
Re: Re:
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.
Re: Re:
Where did AC say anything about spending more money only on education?
Re: Re:
The problem with that narrative is that crime also went down in cities that didn’t make changes to their policing and prosecution practices.
Constant narrative...
…by Republican politicians running for office.
And usually with an implication that the crime is committed by illegal immigrants crossing our southern border with the support of woke liberals.
Uh, how exactly are those statistics collected? Because I’ve been seeing a lot of ‘ACAB’ and ‘if you saw someone shoplifting, no you didn’t’ lately.
Is the decrease in reported crime because crime rates have actually been dropping, or because people aren’t reporting these crimes to the police?
Re:
That’s exactly what it is. We’ve all been seeing these smash and grabs and shoplifters on TV cleaning stores out. A lot of that’s not getting reported. Crime rates definitely haven’t been falling where I live.
Re: Re:
Making up shit is also not reported.
Re: Re:
Have you though? Do you think something as shocking as that might actually be nowhere near as common as you perceive it to be because it would get a disproportionate amount of media coverage?
Re:
Because food banks are absolutely full of gluten-free and dairy-free options, amirite? 🤦♂️
US crime rates are out of control – but I wonder how much of that crime is white collar or financial. Those are never the sorts of crime that the cops or Republicans are worried about, typically because they’ve got a finger in that pie.
'Be Afraid!' might as well be the GOP motto
When a central pillar of your political party involves making and keeping people afraid(and therefore easier to manipulate) and ‘honesty’ isn’t then of course you just ignore any data that contradicts your claims, as otherwise you might have to admit to and try to fix problems that actually exist, like oh I dunno, rampant corruption and corporations given free reign to do whatever they want to make a buck…
Not only are there cities not reporting crime statistics to the FBI, there are cities not even keeping track of crimes. There’s also a shortage on police officers across the country. Some cities just aren’t prosecuting crimes or their prosecutors are doing plea deals to drop violent crimes down to misdemeanors. Crime is definitely up where I live. They’re barely able to give people their court date before the statute of limitations is up. I know someone that got charged with a DUI and it took him 2.5 years just to go to court.
Re:
A lack of reporting of crime means crime is increasing, interesting.
Perhaps I should stop reporting my income, it will then increase – right?
Making up shit is fun and exciting, amaze your friends and family.
Re:
So somehow police officer counts are down across the country… and yet there’s still enough arrests to a point where the court system can’t handle it, leading to delays of several years before a court date can be arranged? So which is it? Are there more or less police officers or not?
