Industry Groups Back To 'Negotiating' Net Neutrality

Following Google and Verizon’s announced framework for net neutrality (a framework that has no real meaning), the FCC announced that it was no longer holding closed door meetings with industry lobbyists, as they were not fostering the “robust framework to preserve the openness and freedom of the internet.” No matter for those lobbyists. They’ll just gather elsewhere, without the FCC and continue to hash out plans.
I’m reminded of Adam Smith’s famous quote:
“People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices.”
But, really, I’m trying to figure out what the purpose of these meetings really could be. After all, these companies coming to some form of an agreement doesn’t mean a damn thing if the FCC decides to push forward with its own plans. So, the idea must be that some sort of voluntary industry agreement could mean that the FCC won’t make certain rules official, but again that seems backwards. The industry shouldn’t be colluding to set up rules — especially without anyone representing consumers’ interests (remember them?). Rather than all these industry lobbyists hashing out some sort of agreement that might not mean anything, shouldn’t we just focus on making sure there’s enough competition in the market that keeps the most egregious possible actions unthinkable by these companies? Is that so much to ask for?

I don’t care if they come to any sort of agreement among themselves, so long as the legal system stops blocking competitors from entering the market. Then these people can be poor, have no assets, no influence, and agree amongst themselves to whatever meaningless agreement they want to and no one would care because it won’t benefit them any nor will it affect anyone else.

Still a little hope that the FCC has enough integrity
to actually regulate in public interest by ruling cable ISPs common carriers, and thereby for “net neutrality”. Despite the worrying implications of those secret meetings, nothing alarming seems to be in the works.

I hope they have enough integrity to not make that power grab and subsequently burden an amazing frontier with regulations and favoritism that is decidedly not in the public interest.
Actually, I know they don’t; what I really hope is that it’s not politically feasible for them to do so. My fear is that the longer this remains a public discussion regarding whether the government should or should not get involved and mess it up, the greater the temptation for glory-seeking politicians to adopt it as a cause celebre and insist on net “neutrality” – in which the rich and politically favored are more neutral than the rest.

The secret meetings are alarming enough in their own right. And I see no problem with cablecos becoming common carriers as long as they want to be telcos and deliver dial tone. Level playing field remember?

Trust the FCC?
Why do all of you put faith in an institution that is not accountable to us in any way (other than being directed by a new administration that only changes every 4 years at the earliest)? At least Verizon, AT&T, Google, other corporations, etc. are held accountable in one important way: the dollar. If they implement policies that I don’t like I can switch providers or stop paying. If the service I pay for now becomes less valuable to me I can stop paying or choose to pay less. The FCC on the other hand can do whatever it wants to (claiming to be in the interest of the consumer) and if I don’t like it well I’m screwed. I’d have to move to another country…

Those who are variously referred to as progressives, globalists, socialists, and the “New World Order”, among other less polite things, have belatedly recognized the threat the web represents to their agenda, and they are now trying to correct that error. Like it or not, this cabal of industrialists and polititians will succeed, because they own the hardware. They own all the devices that make up the internet’s backbone, and they control who gets access to it, so they can set the rules.
I still say we, the little people, need to start building Internet 3.0. I have no idea what form it can take, probably some sort of decentralized WAN, but I do know that if we want a truly neutral ‘net, we have to control the hardware.

Super-Secret Probationary Negotiations
These not-so-secret negotiations are taking place at ITIC, an industry group that has members on all sides of the open Internet/net neutrality/Web vs. Internet issue, so it’s not really sensible to view them as monopolists looking to carve up a market, but I realize some people will do that anyway.
They’re not really about the FCC, they’re about the pending Congressional action that will clarify the FCC’s role regarding Internet regulation.
Contrary to the web’s conspiracy theories, the issues around the open Internet controversy have less to do with web sites than with enabling new applications on the Internet that need real-time behavior from ISPs.
As the Internet said to the net neutrality movement, “It’s not you, it’s me.”
