WAPI's Back Again?
Remember a few years ago when China decided they wanted their own damn WiFi standard because the one everyone else was using wasn’t secure? Many people suspected it had a lot more to do with forcing non-Chinese tech companies to share their intellectual property with a small list of Chinese firms to get access to China’s own “WAPI” spec. It caused a bit of a diplomatic mess, and China finally agreed to back down from the plan, only to try to sneak it back last year… a process that stalled out. Now Andy Updegrove lets us know that it appears to be back on the agenda again. Perhaps because China’s had so much success with their home grown 3G standard, they’ve decided they’re finally ready to shake up WiFi as well.
