China's 3G Standard Might Finally Be Ready

China’s homegrown 3G standard is finally ready, according to a report in the Communist Party’s newspaper. There’s little in the way of details in the report, beyond saying TD-SCDMA “is mature enough for large scale networks”. Another Chinese source says the government still isn’t ready to issue 3G licenses, but that work on pre-commercial networks should start soon, followed by more tests of the standard and equipment based on it. Given the way the development of TD-SCDMA has gone, with all sorts of tests and trials and it remaining very unclear if the standard is all it’s cracked up to be, forgive us for waiting for more conclusive proof than a report from a state-run newspaper on whether it’s really ready, and if it’s any good.
