In addition to its overpriced music store, Sprint also today fully launched its EV-DO network. The consumer, phone-only plans are priced at $15, $20 and $25, each allowing access to more TV and radio channels, but they all allow for unlimited data access. If a user wants to tether their phone to their computer, it’s an additional $25 per month. So a user could get unlimited EV-DO access on their laptop (via their phone) for as little as $40 per month plus voice charges — a pretty decent shot across the bow of Verizon and its more expensive data plans. We’ve bemoaned the lack of real competition in the wireless broadband market before, but it looks like things could be changing quickly, with Sprint’s launch today, and Cingular’s 3G launch rumored to come as early as tomorrow.

Or Time Warner, those bastards. Stupidifying the consumer market with “Digital Phone” that disconnects almost 20% of calls.

I washed my cell phone and while shopping for a new one I was browsing the Cingular website. They’re boasting about which phones have EDGE capability. I’d like to try to future proof a little bit… if only I knew what they plan to charge.

Cingular is launching UMTS supposidly tomorrow, so I wouldn’t go for an EDGE phone. Wait a couple of days at least for UMTS
