Korean Mobile Firms Told To Open Up

The South Korean government has noticed that the mobile operators there are being a bit closed in letting people access the internet. They’re not happy that everyone needs to go through their operators’ portal to get anywhere, and have started doling out fines. The idea of locking users in seems so short-sighted. It was the openness of the regular internet that helped it catch on. About the only thing that closing access off does is suggest to people that the mobile operators know their content isn’t as good as others’ and therefore they need an artificial barrier to keep people in. If they just made sure their portals and their content was worthwhile, it wouldn’t be an issue.
