Amazon Seeks Patent For Data Mining

theodp writes “Internet privacy groups who consider Amazon.com’s Purchase Circles an invasion of yours and your employer’s privacy might want to peruse the e-tailer’s just-published patent application for Computer services for identifying and exposing associations between user communities and items in a catalog.” Looking at the patent, I fail to see how this is anything other than a patent for data mining a specific set of data. Why is that patentable?
