Another WiFi Positioning System?

A year ago, we heard about a few different “WiFi positioning system” offerings. The idea was as a sort of urban competitor to GPS (since GPS runs into some problems in “urban canyons”) where the knowledge of where specific WiFi access points were could create an ad hoc positioning system. However, after all the hype a year ago, not much seemed to come of them. Yet, here’s another company claiming that it, too, is rolling out a WiFi positioning system that can calculate a user’s location within 40 meters (which isn’t actually that good). It still seems like, at best, this is a temporary niche market, especially as GPS technology continues to improve.
