Some Dot Com Dropouts Did Okay
from the still-not-recommended,-though... dept
A few months ago we pointed to an article checking in on some people who had dropped out of school to pursue the dot com dream. Most weren’t particularly successful. Some were back in school, while others were still trying to figure out what to do. CNN is now running a very similar story that focuses much more on a few dropouts who have done fairly well for themselves, while still suggesting that the vast majority of people who dropped out of school hoping to find the pot of gold at the end of the dot com rainbow didn’t end up with the results they expected. It’s a little annoying to see generalizations like this. Articles either tend to glorify or demonize those who dropped out to work for a tech company — and it makes it seem as though everyone who does this is facing the same circumstances. Each case, each person and each job is quite different — and what makes sense for one might not make sense for plenty of others.

Dropped out to DotCom
I dropped college in my sophomore year to get a killer job at Dell! I got in just in time for the stock to split several times and am a happy Dellionaire. 9 years later, I’m ready to go back to school and maybe teach high school computer science in a small town in the middle of nowhere. Would definately do it again if I had the chance!
