Cingular Backs Down On Nextel Spectrum Shift Block

Verizon, despite all their early opposition, made it clear that they would no longer try to block Nextel’s spectrum swap, but we mentioned last week that Cingular was stepping up to complain. However, it looks like they quickly reconsidered, as just days after protesting the swap, they dropped all objections to the move, suggesting that someone realized it was a waste of time. It’s still amusing, however, to see how the story was spun, saying Cingular “became the second national mobile-phone carrier to back off,” as if all the carriers had officially stated their opposition, and somehow by being the second to “back off,” it made them ahead of the others.
