CommunicAsia Top 3 – Security Cameras

There were a remarkable number of IP-based video surveillance units at CommunicAsia. I imagine the rapid growth in this sub-sector is the result (once again) of the increased growth and decreased cost of always-on broadband access. Formerly, security camera systems often tied into a control center by dialing up a connection on circuit-switched lines, but now not only can emergency calls be made via IP, but the camera images can easily be monitored in real-time from myriad devices, either by a security agency in a NOC, or by the user themselves at work or via a mobile phone. These systems seem like an obvious value-add that broadband providers may want to bundle with their service. The installed nature of the cameras will dramatically increase loyalty for these companies. One note, for those of you with existing dial-up security systems, be careful if you are considering upgrading to an all IP VoIP service, your legacy security system may no longer be able to dial out, yet may not show any errors despite the fact that the solution is broken.
