Flashmob Super Computer Not So Super

from the still-flashed,-though... dept

You may remember back in February a lot of news was made by some folks deciding to try to create the world’s first “flashmob supercomputer”, gathering a bunch of folks into a large room, stringing all the machines together with some special software and hoping that the combined computing power would put the briefly functional cluster of machines onto the top 500 most powerful super computer lists. Well, the flash super computing experience happened this past Saturday and the end result wasn’t super enough to make the list of 500 top super computers, but was still fairly impressive. They didn’t even get halfway to their goal of 500 gigaflops (they got 180 gigaflops), but even that is a pretty impressive feat on its own. I doubt this will be the last time such events are attempted.
