Drivers? Where We're Going, We Don't Need Drivers!

Cars are getting complicated. These days, the automakers are working on all sorts of new technologies, electronics, computer equipment and sensors to shove into your vehicle to allow it to do more, while (hopefully) making it safer and easier to drive. It’s getting so advanced that the NY Times is wondering when we’ll have a car that doesn’t need a driver: the first truly automated automobile. The automakers, of course, are quick to claim that isn’t where they’re headed. That’s because they know that part of the appeal of buying a car is actually getting to drive that car – so they’re not silly enough to remove that buying incentive. Still, our vehicles are going to become ever more automated, and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to find out, one day, that you really can set your vehicle on “auto-drive” while you take a nap or watch the latest movie playing on the in-vehicle screen.
