Bob Vila: Spammer

from the seriously? dept

I noticed in the last week or so, for the first time, I’ve been receiving “legitimate” spam, under the CAN-SPAM act. This is spam that appears to actually be sent from the source it claims it’s sent from, and which includes an opt-out link (no, I still won’t click it) and an actual address in the email. Of course, my regular amount of spam has kept on growing as well – so, as expected, the CAN SPAM law has actually increased, not decreased, the amount of spam I receive. And, yet, the politicians responsible still haven’t said anything. In the meantime, it looks like we have the first “action” under this law as an ISP is suing the folks who run the Bob Vila home improvement website for spamming. Of course, I had been under the impression that private parties couldn’t sue under CAN SPAM, and that it was only limited to government action. Still, even if spammers lose a lawsuit or two, I doubt it’s going to make a difference.
