Comparing The Porn Industry To Hollywood On Copyright Issues

from the mixed-bag dept

This isn’t the first time someone has written an article comparing the response of the entertainment industry to the porn industry when it comes to dealing with copyright issues and file sharing. However, this article includes some interesting quotes from some of the big names that suggest how they’ve learned to embrace file sharing. Playboy.com calls file sharing: “direct marketing at its finest.” There’s also a great quote from Playboy.com’s president Randy Nicolau when asked about the recording and movie industries responses to file sharing so far: “I haven’t spent much time thinking about it. It’s like asking Henry Ford, ‘What were the buggy-whip guys doing wrong?'” It sounds like many of the bigger publishers have realized that the file sharing and other sites copying their photos tends to lead to more interest in their work – which leads to more money. The rest of the article shows a variety of tactics taken by porn publishers. Some are following very similar tactics to the entertainment industry, while some have tried and abandoned such plans – saying that it cost a lot more money to go after these people and didn’t help increase actual sales at all.
