Watch Out For Mobile Phone Viruses

While it’s been talked about before, people are starting to take the issue of wireless viruses and worms more seriously. Partly, this is because an increasing number of handsets are internet enabled, and can get hit with the same viruses that are found on a regular computer. However, it’s only a matter of time before virus writers start to focus on mobile phones, and since so few systems have any kind of protection, the initial results may be somewhat devastating. Of course, generally speaking, if your mobile phone dies, it’s not nearly as traumatic as losing all the data on your computers – but it still could be quite a nuisance. I’m sure it won’t be long before we start seeing common offerings for anti-virus solutions on handsets from all the usual vendors of anti-virus software. Comment from Derek: But even if the damage it causes the individual is low, it could severely affect the network operator, so the carriers are extremely sensitive to this issue. Expect preventative measures to start from the operator camp, and possibly to be invisible to customers.
