China Creates Alternative DVD Format

from the betamax-part-II dept

The Chinese government has just enveiled an alternative to DVD called Enhanced Versatile Disc. China is currently the world’s largest manufacturer of DVD players. And understandably, China would like to avoid DVD licensing fees, but this new standard is probably about 5 years too late. Unless the EVDs provide some advantage (no copy protection, ahem), consumers will probably see no benefit in changing the format that they use. And what sort of crazy content provider(s) would license to this new format?

Questions about EVD ...

i read a very good article about this today. basically it said that china basically produces most dvd players already, have a large internal market, and have enough usa – china trade flow to basically f*ck over both micr$oft’s new drm & the current dvd move studio cartel. basically, when micro$oft comes out with the new drm format, you know its going to cost (xbox style) say $400. if china is smart, they make new evd only players for $50 AND they also produce (free) software that allows you to rip current dvd & burn / create evd’s. once the asian ‘movie pirate’s’ start producing bulk evd’s & people pick up a $50 evd player, the chinese can basically say to hollywood – play our game & get a cut or dont & miss out.
