Cyber Terrorism Is Just A Theory

from the everyone-run-along-now dept

For years, when many folks were predicting the imminent end of civilization due to cyber-terrorism, there were plenty of others who believed the actual risks associated with cyber terrorism are very low, compared to other threats that are out there. That’s not to say it couldn’t cause hassles – but the predictions of all out destruction seemed to go a bit far. Now Gartner has gotten into the game and is saying that cyber terrorism is much more of a theory than reality. Basically, though, they’re saying that no one has initiated any online attacks with terror as their motive. They admit that other attacks have caused real damage – but with a different motive. In other words, they’re making it all a big semantic debate, rather than a substantive one. However, the end result is still the same: you should try to make sure your own systems are secure, but don’t freak out every time someone mentions “cyber terrorism”.

Theory into reality

With recent documented cases of reactors SCRAMing due to worms messing up the monitoring consoles, I think we can safely say that theory is slowly but surely becomming reality.

I can think of several other recent instances that point out the trend as well.

The fact of the matter is that it is asymetric/a force multiplier and because of that, it is being heavily researched…. and due to it’s lack of visibility, the reality is that this type of warfare will be deployed with regularity in the future.
