Computer Security Shifting Metaphors: It's An Airport, Not A Fortress

from the models,-models,-models dept

While some may laugh at anyone spending so much time trying to come up with a metaphor for computer security, it does often influence how people think about certain problems and what solutions they’re likely to create. So, it’s interesting to read one suggestion that we need to stop thinking of computer security like the machine is a “fortress” and everyone needs to be kept out. Instead, they suggest, it’s like an airport – where you let everyone in, but restrict them to certain areas and have security checks along the way. Does this mean I’m going to have to take off my shoes the next time I visit a “secure” site?
