AT&T Starting W-CDMA Tests

Following Verizon Wireless’s high profile launch of their EV-DO system last month there was a report suggesting that they would be the only major carrier offering real broadband cellular data rates for quite some time, as the other carriers were either taking their time, or focused on upgrading to slower technologies as an interim step. Looks like AT&T Wireless may be going against that plan, as they’re now running W-CDMA trials in Miami and are targeting 300 kbps downstream and 64 Kbps upstream data rates (comparable with what people are reporting on Verizon’s EV-DO offering). Should be another interesting one to watch (though, I thought we weren’t supposed to call in W-CDMA now that the marketing folks have redubbed it 3GSM).
