WiFi Hype Reaches MSNBC

I’m a huge fan of WiFi, obviously. However, I get a little nervous when I read articles like this latest one on MSNBC which seem to suggest WiFi is the solution to all the world’s problems. The describe a “home of the future” where someone can control all their home appliances via a PDA in their car on the drive home. This is the same picture that’s been predicted for years, and if it actually came to pass (unlikely in the form described) WiFi is such a tiny part of the equation that you have to wonder why the story was even included. The rest of the article basically just takes some Cometa quotes about ubiquitous WiFi and accepts them as fact. Sure, it would be nice, but this sort of reporting does nothing but build up expectations on a technology. Will the wireless industry ever learn to stop overhyping and underdelivering?
