Cingular GSM Network Downed – Confirmed

This was first reported over the weekend on Slashdot by a reader, and then echoed on various other sites – but I hadn’t seen any official confirmation until now. Cingular has admitted that a large portion of their GSM network in the midwest was knocked offline all weekend. It left 900,000 customers without service, and lasted from Friday afternoon until Sunday morning. There are conflicting rumors and no official reports about what actually caused the outage. In true carrier fashion, right now they’re telling customers impacted by this to call and request credit – rather than simply crediting everyone. Now, let’s just see if they can figure out a way to blame this on local number portability too.
