Is 3G Dead?
The Economist is looking at the dreadful launch of Hutchison’s 3 service (which we chronicled here over and over again) and asks whether or not it’s a bad sign for other 3G offerings. Instead, the conclude that Hutchison was pretty incompetent with their 3 offering, and 3G will catch on just fine. One thing, though, is that thanks to 3’s overmarketing (and under-delivering) of the 3G concept, everyone else is staying as far away from the “3G” label as possible. They’re basically just trying to sneak in higher-speed data services along with cheaper voice offerings, so that people will end up moving on up to 3G without realizing it.
