Business Week Discovers Push-To-Talk

Business Week has discovered the push-to-talk party and is using it to write up an early obituary for Nextel – suggesting that PTT is a killer app (suggesting it’s IM to cellular calls’ email) and that there’s lots of money to be made – except if you’re Nextel. I’m still not sure that the average person will see the draw of PTT (at least to the point of paying for it). Part of the reason Nextel has done well with it is that they’ve focused on markets where PTT is clearly useful. Trying to charge your average consumer to quickly chat with a friend might be a tougher sell. Meanwhile, the article does provide some info on the interoperability question, suggesting that we’ll have competing standards (yet again) – but at least efforts are being made to tie various systems together.
