He…Could…Go…All…The…Way!

In a political touchdown, Rep. Steve Largent (R-Okla.) will replace Thomas Wheeler as president and CEO of the Cellular Telephony and Internet Association effective in November. The CTIA is the powerful cellular industry body that represents all the carriers and lobbies government, publicizes industry arguments, fosters cooperation, organizes conferences, etc. Largent’s got game. His resume includes a slot in the NFL Hall of Fame for his work as a Seattle Seahawks wide receiver, and 8 years in Congress. He left Congress in early 2002 to run for governor of Oklahoma, but that pass was incomplete. Largent now joins the huddle as senior public policy consultant in a DC law firm. It’s generally agreed that outgoing CTIA chief Tom Wheeler is a tough act to follow, which Largent acknowledges while committing to do his best to fill Wheeler’s cleats.
