Novell Snaps Up Ximian
from the that-came-out-of-nowhere dept
Lots of surprise this morning in various circles about Novell buying up well-known Linux software maker Ximian. It sounds like a case where both companies were struggling a bit with direction. Novell provides money, customers, and “big corporate brand name”, and Ximian provides well-known, widely used (and sometimes quite innovative) Linux apps. So, the question now is whether or not this provides the necessary boost for both companies.

Mutiny in the ranks?
Miguel d’Icaza and Nat Friedman seem to be rather mute on the subject.
Any chance this is indicative of a little dissatisfaction with the deal?
Re: Mutiny in the ranks?
I’d guess since they were co-founders, they were instrumental in making the deal. You probably didn’t see much mention of it from Novell’s website before the official announcement either. We’ll see in a few days. Strategic announcements are stronger when there’s a little surprise to it… it got a lot of press mentions.
