CPUC Proposes Telecommunication Consumer Bill Of Rights

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) released the final draft of their Telecommunications Consumer Bill of Rights, which they propose become law for all telecom providers, fixed and wireless. Of course, as taxpayers, we should question why we are paying representatives to spend time on this at the state level, as well as at the federal level. The CTIA head, Tom Wheeler, responded as expected by deriding the CPUC effort and claiming that industry self-regulation would be equally effective and cheaper. I may agree with the CTIA on that, but one has to wonder why each industry waits until there is imminent government regulation before they decide to “self-regulate”. By barely hiding the fact that their “voluntary” house-cleaning is a reaction to judicial pressure, they really take the “self” out of “self-regulation”.
