Google's Dual-Use Copyright Notice

from the interesting-user-interface-bits dept

He’s an amusing story from Google saying that the only reason they have a copyright notice at the bottom of the Google front page is that the page was so simple, many users kept waiting for “the rest of the page” to load. The copyright notice, which serves no other useful purpose, and certainly isn’t required for any legal reasons, seems to satisfy users that the page has fully loaded, since that’s something you’d put at the bottom of the page. According to a Google representative: “We put it in to say, ‘Here’s the end, and start searching.’ Our lawyers tell us we don’t need it there.”
