Missing 3G Calls – Get An SMS

Maybe I just don’t understand the way these things work, but this one strikes me as one of the more useless wireless ideas I’ve heard about recently. A company has struck a deal with Hutchison’s 3 service to send you an SMS if you miss a call. The idea is that, if you are out of range, you can still find out you missed a call by getting an SMS. Of course, if you’re out of range, doesn’t that mean you won’t get the SMS either? I’m confused as to how this is any different from the “missed calls” display on most mobile phones. Clearly, I must be missing something. Hopefully someone with a better understanding of what’s happening here can provide the details.
