Qualcomm Lowers PTT On CDMA Latency

In other news from Qualcomm, the chip-maker announced the successful demnonstration of PTT over CDMA2000 with call set-up times of less than 2 seconds. Nextel’s DirectConnect 2-way walkie-talkie-like feature is in the cross hairs of many other carriers who seek to match the success Nextel has had with PTT. However, Nextel has an all-digital core network which helps keep PTT latency at a minimum, and so far, competing solutions have introduced too much delay to be considered “real time”. Nextel CEO Tim Donahue has stated repeatedly that he does not feel threatened by the other carriers, but if this <2 second demo can be deployed in real-world CDMA carriers, then the threat is credible.
