Telescopes Of The World, Unite!

from the all-together-now dept

Who needs access to a real observatory any more? A bunch of scientists are working on creating a National Virtual Observatory that combines all sorts of images from telescopes all around to create quite a useful (virtual) database of astronomy data. In just a simple test of the system to make sure it was working properly, astronomers think they might have found a new brown dwarf (objects halfway between stars and planets that are usually difficult to spot). It sounds like a fairly impressive system – and they’re working on adding a Google-like search to the front-end as well.
