China Checks Mobile Messages For SARS Rumors

A couple weeks back we had the story of how China was arresting people for sending SARS rumors via SMS. Now, Reuters is reporting on some of the details of how they tracked those “rogue” SMSers down. It appears they’ve set up a system that alerts authorities anytime anyone sends out a large number of SMS messages at once. The sender is “isolated” and whatever messages that person is sending out are immediately reviewed by Chinese authorities. Of course, in China, where internet usage is continuously monitored and/or censored, this shouldn’t come as a huge surprise.
